West Palm Beach, Fl. May 2023 – For over three decades, the Florida Engineering Society and the Cox Science Center and Aquarium have been collaborating to host their annual engineering design competition, Engineer It!, in West Palm Beach, Florida. The competition is open to students in Grades 1 through 12 from schools mostly located in Palm Beach and Broward counties.
With over 300 participants, parents, families, and teachers, this event has grown into a highly anticipated competition. Students are tasked with designing and building innovative solutions to real-world engineering problems, with the goal of meeting specific criteria set forth by the competition organizers. On the day of the event, students bring their designs to the competition to be tested and judged by a panel of experts. The designs are evaluated based on a variety of factors, including functionality, creativity, and adherence to the competition’s criteria.
Belcan’s presence at the event was highly engaging, with a focus on promoting the importance of STEM education and encouraging young people to pursue careers in science and engineering. During their interaction with the students, the Belcan team discussed the nature of their work as well as engineering in general. The team was thrilled to answer the students’ many curious questions.
One of the highlights of Belcan’s participation was the paper airplane activity. The Belcan team provided the students with kits and guided them through the process of building their own paper airplanes.
After the success of their involvement in this year’s Engineer It! competition, the Belcan WPB office is already making plans to send an even larger team to the event next year. The team is eager to increase their involvement and engage with more students and families in the community.
The employees at the WPB office are highly committed to giving back to their community in a variety of ways. In addition to their involvement in the Engineer It! competition, employees also participate in other initiatives and partnerships that promote education and community engagement. Notably, the office is in close proximity to the Center for Creative Education (CCE), a unique educational institution that uses the arts to enrich and transform children’s educational experience. Belcan employees often visit the CCE to read books with the kids attending the center, providing them with valuable mentorship and inspiration. In addition, the team is planning to invite students from the CCE to the WPB office to demonstrate some of the life-size robots created by two talented teams that Belcan curated during the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) South Florida Regional event. Belcan hopes to inspire CCE students to pursue careers in STEM and demonstrate the exciting opportunities available in the field.
