May 2023 – On May 10th, the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst hosted the Senior Design Showcase for Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (MIE) students. A total of 28 teams participated, presenting their innovative designs as part of their capstone program. Each team’s work was assessed by a panel of six judges including MIE department members and UMass faculty. The university also invited local business leaders and entrepreneurs to participate as judges and to bring a practical perspective to the evaluation process. With such a broad range of expertise on the evaluation panel, the students had the opportunity to receive feedback from multiple angles.
Belcan’s judge helped score the participating teams based on a comprehensive set of criteria assessing each team’s ability to effectively capture the needs of their customers, translating those needs into precise engineering specifications.
Among the six teams assessed, an exceptional achievement was awarded to Team 9707, known as General Dynamics Drilling and Pinning. This particular team was engaged in a yearlong industrially-sponsored mechanical engineering project that garnered top honors at the MIE Senior Design Showcase. Throughout their project, Team 9707 demonstrated remarkable engineering skills and problem-solving abilities. They carefully developed and tested various prototypes, employing advanced analysis techniques to validate their design iterations.
