Lexington, KY – May 2023 – The Aviation Museum of Kentucky’s Aerospace Education Center organized its inaugural Girls in Aerospace program, designed to inspire girls ages 10 to 17 to discover aviation and aerospace and consider careers in the field. The program, funded by NASA Kentucky at the University of Kentucky, featured a lineup of 10 accomplished presenters who demonstrated different aspects of the industry and proved that aviation and aerospace offer an exciting and diverse range of career opportunities.
A Belcan Engineering Director was invited to talk about career opportunities in aerospace, with a special focus on space launch. As the only engineer presenting, he was able to provide a unique perspective on the evolution of the commercial space market as well as what it means to be an aerospace engineer, discussing the education path one needs to take to pursue a career in this field – giving the girls a glimpse into the day-to-day life of an engineer, describing the challenges and rewards of working in the field and how one can make a difference in the world through their work.
Our Belcan sponsors also brought in a rotorhead to see and touch. The design of the rotorhead was the result of a collaboration between Belcan and the University of Louisville’s engineering students. As part of their capstone project, sponsored by and under the direction of Belcan, the students were tasked with designing the rotorhead. The rotorhead was also showcased at the Aviation & Aerospace Day event at the Kentucky State Capitol in February. During the event, the Belcan team advocated for the importance of aviation-focused businesses in the Commonwealth, highlighting the economic benefits that such businesses can bring to the region. The team was on hand to answer questions, discuss the design process, and demonstrate the passion and commitment that Belcan brings to the industry and the company’s role in shaping the future of aviation.
