Kentucky Agriculture Heritage Center

Located in Harrodsburg, KY, the Kentucky Agriculture Heritage Center (KAHC) will exemplify sustainability. Designed to maximize energy efficiency, the KAHC generates power onsite through wind turbines and solar array panels. An extensive geothermal well field will utilize the earth itself to heat and cool the building which, in addition to natural ventilation, can fulfill year round HVAC demands and greatly reduce operating costs.

Water conservation is a key component. Through the site strategy of utilizing pervious pavement, storm water runoff is controlled and collected in a tank which is then used for landscape irrigation. As well, rainwater is collected from the roof and reused as grey water for non-potable needs, such as flushing in restrooms. The management and conservation of natural resources illustrates the KAHC’s mission of being responsible stewards of the environment.

The KAHC will feature a kitchen and restaurant. Solid food waste from the kitchen will be recycled through an Organic Pulping System. Waste water generated from the Organic Pulping System will be introduced into the grey water system, and solid food particles will be dried, baled, and then returned to the land as organic fertilizer for the on-site organic garden which supplies food to the kitchen. This cradle-to-cradle concept is critical to sustainability. The KAHC will clearly demonstrate its commitment to integrating sustainable features that work together in unity to showcase Kentucky Agriculture – past, present, and future.
