Pipeline Compressor Analysis

Belcan performed structural analysis of a pipeline compressor to substantiate design of static hardware under operating and hydrostatic test conditions.

A 3D finite element model was generated including the compressor casing, cover, shear ring, and attached piping flanges. Bolts were modeled explicitly and flange gaskets were simulated using nonlinear springs. Surface-to-surface contact was used at all part interfaces.

The model was analyzed to determine bolt preload for the hydrostatic and operating conditions. Pressure and piping forces were considered to determine integrity of the case. Deflections, reaction forces, and bolt clamping loads were processed along with peak stresses. Positioning for strain gauges and dial indicators was recommended based on stress results.

Belcan's analysis validated the design of the compressor and the customer was able to complete physical testing with the recommended gauge locations.
